Producing energy from the biomass recovered by the processes of pruning trees in the area is the project's main goal.
The waste sorting in the province of Mantua, has reached an annual quantity equivalent to 95,264 tons that is the 42.88% of total waste. Mowing and trimming are approximately the 40% of waste sorting for a total of 37,349 tons. Mowing when separated from branches and less the humidity are about 5000 tons. This wood origin material, when processed and stored, could be an important energy resource. The project recovers the wood material from the waste sorting made by the municipalities this operation allows them to reach two goals: 1. conversion of  waste in energy resource 2. reduction of costs of  the waste disposal, by  producing energy from biomass. Such opportunity is even more significant if considering that four municipalities of the province of Mantua have or are about to install technologic systems for the production of heat or electricity from biomass.
It is interesting the opportunity to organize in a rational way the collection and the storage of the branches in order to answer to the growing demand for biomass (up to now estimated in 1700 t / year), for combustion processes in energy production. This biomass project is in perfect harmony with the Fo.R.Agri project (Renewable Sources in Agriculture), which was sealed in 2005 between the Province of Mantua and the Region of Lombardy under a Framework Agreement for Territorial Development. This project aims to develop renewable energy sources, therefore the energy improvement of biomass is a very important element. Examples of realized projects on the Mantova territory are:- Stirling project- The city council of Quistello, installed a micro combined heat and power system. - Biomass project- A micro-process for energy production from wood at the Istituto Tecnico Agrario di Palidano of Gonzaga (MN). An old oil boiler was replaced by a more modern wood chips boiler, fed by a dedicated cultivation of Miscanthus and by branches picked by cleaning in the school's park. All the real or potential projects above, are part of the Mantova Province Energy Program, which supports various initiatives, as the development on the territory of local energy production from renewable sources.
